چکیده
Historians of science have pointed to essentialist beliefs about species as a major impediment to the discovery of natural selection. The present study investigated whether such beliefs are an impediment to learning this concept as well. Participants (43 children aged four to nine and 34 adults) were asked to judge the variability of various behavioral and anatomical properties across different members of the same species. Adults who accepted within-species variation – both actual and potential – were significantly more likely to demonstrate a selection-based understanding of evolution than adults who denied within-species variation. The latter demonstrated an alternative, incorrect understanding of evolution and produced response patterns that were both quantitatively and qualitatively similar to those produced by preschool-aged children. Overall, it is argued that psychological essentialism, though a useful bias for drawing species-wide inductions, leads individuals to devalue within-species variation and, consequently, to fail to understand natural selection. Running head: ESSENTIALIZATION AS ABDUCTION Essentialization as a Distinct Form of Abductive Reasoning
Essentialism is often criticized for producing biased behavior. Because it is a view through which people attempt to grasp the essence of things, it appears contradictory that essentialism might result in distortions of reality. Somewhere within essentialist cognitive processes there must be mistakes or omissions that fail to capture reality correctly. In this paper, I treat essentialization as...

متن کاملOrigins of Essentialism 1 on the Functional Origins of Essentialism
This essay examines the proposal that psychological essentialism results from a history of natural selection acting on human representation and inference systems. It has been argued that the features that distinguish essentialist representational systems are especially well suited for representing natural kinds. If the evolved function of essentialism is to exploit the rich inductive potential ...
متن کاملWhat Is More Informative in the History of Science, the Signal or the Noise?
In many domains of knowledge, from mechanics (McCloskey, 1983) to thermodynamics (Wiser, 1987) to astronomy (Vosniadou & Brewer, 1992), it has been claimed that conceptual development in the individual resembles theory change in the history of science. Here, Kampourakis takes issue with that claim in the domain of evolution. In particular, he argues (a) that early evolutionary theorists never c...
متن کاملEssentialist Beliefs About Bodily Transplants in the United States and India
Psychological essentialism is the belief that some internal, unseen essence or force determines the common outward appearances and behaviors of category members. We investigated whether reasoning about transplants of bodily elements showed evidence of essentialist thinking. Both Americans and Indians endorsed the possibility of transplants conferring donors' personality, behavior, and luck on r...
